Ellen Guthrie races her mountain bike because the "regular" world doesn't have enough challenges for her. "It's not like we have to go kill a whale to feed the village or anything," she reasons. Joyce Short participates in marathons as a stress reliever and to run for others who can't. Dan Moser refuses to stop road biking despite two horrible crashes because he'd miss the friendships
